Helped Spark an American Music Tradition Dead at 95

Bluegrass has lost a voice that refused to be silenced. Bill Clifton, who pursued music under a secret stage name rather than abandon his dream, has died at 95. Behind the farewell lies a family’s account of a man whose greatest ambition was never personal fame, but keeping beloved songs alive for generations yet to discover his enduring lega…

Born William August Marburg, Clifton adopted the name audiences would come to recognize because his family opposed his musical ambitions. It allowed him to pursue the calling he loved without performing under his birth name. Over decades of recording, touring, and championing traditional music, he helped bring bluegrass to wider audiences. His obituary reported that he died peacefully on October 30; a cause of death was not released.

For his family, the measure of his life extended far beyond his own performances. “He devoted his life to ensuring that the traditional American music he loved would continue to be heard by future generations,” they said. That commitment took many forms: musician, collector, publisher, festival organizer, and international ambassador. Across the United States and overseas, Clifton carried old songs to new listeners. His lasting contribution was not simply being heard, but helping ensure that the music itself would never be forgotten.
