A harrowing story coming out of California is sending shockwaves online. Laura Barajas, a 40-year-old mother of three, was forced to have all of her limbs amputated after contracting flesh-eating bacteria from eating undercooked tilapia. This terrifying ordeal serves as a stark warning for everyone to be cautious when it comes to seafood.
It all started when Laura purchased tilapia from a local market back in July. She cooked and ate the fish, only to fall ill shortly after. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with Vibrio vulnificus, an aggressive and dangerous bacteria commonly found in undercooked seafood.
In order to save her life, all four of Laura’s limbs had to be amputated. A GoFundMe page was set up by her close friend Anna Messina to help with the mounting medical bills. The page includes a heartbreaking image of Laura lying in a hospital bed, highlighting the devastating impact of the situation.
At the time of writing, the page has raised over $123,000, but the financial strain is still overwhelming for Laura’s family. Laura recently underwent life-saving surgery, and her physical condition will require significant adjustments in their lives.
Vibrio vulnificus infections can lead to limb amputations and even death within a day or two of contracting the bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report approximately 150 to 200 cases of Vibrio vulnificus each year, with many requiring intensive care or limb amputation.
Dr. Natasha Spottiswoode, an infectious disease expert, explains that this bacteria can be contracted by consuming contaminated food or through a cut or tattoo exposed to water where the bacteria thrive.
This tragic story should serve as a wake-up call for everyone. It is crucial to handle and cook seafood properly to avoid any potential risks. Let’s share this article with our loved ones to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents from happening. Stay safe and vigilant!
