Tragedy in Texas: 51 Dead, Dozens Missing After Sudden Flooding

A weekend of summer fun turned tragic in Central Texas when flash flooding along the Guadalupe River claimed at least 51 lives, with dozens still missing. The flooding hit hardest in Kerr County, where 43 people, including 15 children, were confirmed dead—many of them at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls. Emergency crews are continuing search and rescue efforts across the region.

The disaster was triggered by torrential rains and a sudden “flood wave,” which sent water surging through low-lying areas. Meteorologists explained that the fast-moving wave turned rivers into deadly torrents within minutes. Authorities say the floodwaters moved so quickly that many campers and residents had little time to escape. Kerr County officials confirmed that 24 deaths were directly linked to the flooding along the Guadalupe River.

Heartbreaking stories have emerged, including the confirmed deaths of several children from Camp Mystic and the loss of elderly couple Joni and Robert Brake, whose cabin was swept away. In another case, a local coach and his family remain missing after floodwaters overtook their vacation home. Despite some successful rescues, including two girls saved by helicopter, many families are still waiting for answers.

As recovery continues, officials urge the public to remain cautious around flood-affected areas and to support relief efforts. What was meant to be a joyful holiday weekend has become a devastating reminder of nature’s power—and the importance of preparedness and community in times of crisis.
