Pope Leo XIV’s First Press Conference Sparks Interpretation as a Subtle Critique of Donald Trump

Pope Leo XIV Subtly Counters Trump in First Address

In his first press conference, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, emphasized respectful communication and praised journalists—remarks widely seen as a veiled critique of Donald Trump. The Pope called for an end to “a war of words,” urging more listening and compassion in public discourse.

His message came just hours after Trump claimed—without evidence—that he influenced the Pope’s selection, despite the conclave process being independent of politics. Trump’s post, filled with typical bombast, stood in stark contrast to the Pope’s calm, inclusive tone.

The Pope also honored journalists who report from conflict zones, defending the importance of a free press—another contrast to Trump’s repeated attacks on the media.

Asked if he had a message for the U.S., the Pope simply replied: “Many. God bless you all.”
