Robin Roberts, the 62-year-old host of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” has married her longtime companion, Amber Laign. Their love story began 18 years ago, when mutual acquaintances put them up on a blind date.
Surprisingly, both women reported it took a year of canceled first-date efforts between them before their friends finally brought them together. After some persuasion, the ladies agreed to meet with common friends, and Roberts promised to kick their mutual buddy under the table if the date went well.
Roberts remembered how, after only a few minutes of meeting, she was already kicking the common buddy. Laign reflected on their first meeting:
“I remember just walking up and she’s just beautiful, and she took my breath away, and she still does.”
The lovebirds began dating when they hit it off, unbeknownst to the general public. It wasn’t until eight years later, in December 2013, that the couple made their relationship public. While thanking the many people who helped her through a health emergency years ago, Roberts showed her appreciation for Laign:
“…I am grateful for…my long time girlfriend, Amber…”
Roberts’ acknowledgement of Laign was the first time the news anchor made her sexuality and connection with her boyfriend public. Their romance was made public after Roberts survived a cancer struggle.
Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer just over two years after their first date. Laign, being the dedicated spouse that she is, stayed by Roberts’ side throughout her rehabilitation. Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome after her mother died.
Laign was there for her once more as she underwent a life-saving transplant. Laign lost her father a few years later and endured her own severe health battle: she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022.
Roberts stepped in as a caretaker this time, staying by Laign’s side as she had chemotherapy and surgery.
Fortunately, both partners were cured of their ailments and are now in a much better place.
Though Roberts stated that she and Laign went through difficult periods during their relationship, she said the harrowing experiences only pushed the couple closer together:
“We could have walked away at any time, and we didn’t.”
The “Good Morning America” anchor and Laign married in their backyard on September 8 in a little ceremony. The wedding was officiated by Roberts’ childhood preacher.
Both brides looked magnificent in gowns designed by fashion designers James Mischka and Mark Badgley. One fan who saw images of Roberts and Laign in their gorgeous wedding gowns exclaimed:
“Beautiful dresses, so classy!! Congratulations.”
Following the wedding, Laign and Roberts hosted a lavish garden-themed reception for their guests. When the newlyweds entered the venue, a violinist played “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.”
Friends and family proceeded to dine and converse around round tables, purchase custom-made cocktails, feast on a delectable Vincenzo Salvatore Cakes wedding cake, and hit the dance floor.
Fellow “Good Morning America” coworker Gio Benitez enthused about the lovely wedding:
“Just so much beauty inside and out…Best wedding ever.”
Many people have continued to wish Roberts and Laign luck in their relationship and wedding.
