It is not unusual to see something that is unfamiliar to us. In fact, many of us probably have run across things that we don’t know, just because technology progresses so quickly.
If you were to put a lot of objects in front of children today, they would have no idea what they were for. Even if they did know, they wouldn’t necessarily know how to use them. This is one of those items.
When I first saw this picture, I was a little stumped as to what it was. In fact, however, I had used it many times in the past but it has not been used in years. I still have one out in the garage!
If this looks familiar to you, you have perhaps used one many years ago or maybe you saw one in your father’s garage. It’s an old oil can spout, and it had a very specific purpose.
Back in the 1980s and before, oil didn’t come in a bottle like it does today. Rather, it would come in a can and this tool was used to puncture the top of the can and then it served as a spout.
That twofold purpose allowed you to release the oil and at the same time, to direct the oil into the proper place without spilling it everywhere. It was an ingenious design, and one that worked very well.
When you stop to think about it, using a bottle of oil is not always the most convenient thing. If you don’t use a funnel, you have to pour very carefully to ensure that the oil doesn’t go over the engine. It can get really messy.
Since you were using the spout with one of these old tools, it was convenient, neat, and kept you from making a mess. Although this is an item that is decades old, it is one that is still remembered and beloved by many who used them regularly when working on cars.
