Facebook users have shared a mother’s letter to her 13-year-old son Aaron. Estella Havisham confronted her son’s belief that he could set his own rules and act like an adult before his time. Due to public viewing, the letter for friends and family went viral. In the letter, Aaron’s fed-up mom threatened to give him adult responsibilities if he didn’t change.
The letter required him to pay rent, food, and maid service (cooking and laundry). He would be charged a “maid fee” for each day his mother had to do these tasks if he didn’t. The post was well-received, with some criticizing her strict parenting style.
“I guess you will need a lesson in independence. Also, as you threw in my face that you are making money now, it will be easier to buy back all the items I bought for you in the past. If you would like your lamp/light bulbs or access to the internet, you will need to pay your share of the costs.”
After criticism, the mother said she only intended to share the letter with her immediate family and friends. She insists on setting rules, expectations, and consequences for her child, despite the accidental public posting. Aaron has followed the mother-son contract since the letter’s success.
“I’m not a bully dictator trying to ‘control’ my child. I am a parent who has every RIGHT to have rules, expectations, and consequences for my child.”
Overall, the letter sparked a debate on parental authority and the importance of setting boundaries and expectations for children.
