We live in a world that seems to be falling apart in so many different ways. Unfortunately, there are many innocent people who are caught up in the tragedy, and they may become a victim unexpectedly.
Kaylin Gillis was a 20-year-old who was simply driving her vehicle and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She had turned around in someone’s driveway because they were lost, and the 66-year-old property owner came out and killed her.
The group of people in the car, which included Blake Walsh, her boyfriend, had accidentally driven into the driveway of Kevin Monahan. They tried to back out and leave, but he came outside and fired two shots from a shotgun. One of them killed the girl.
Now it was finally time for him to be sentenced for the crime. When the sentencing was taking place, the judge spoke about the unrealized potential of such a tragic loss. He also reminded Monahan of just what he had done wrong, saying that it was not okay to shoot people for turning down your driveway.
There was a lot of tension in the courtroom during the sentencing. As Walsh talked about the chaos taking place as they tried to flee the property, they said that they found Gillis unresponsive during the panic. It is a moment they will never forget.
Monahan didn’t say a word, and he didn’t speak at that time. His attorney attempted to say that it was just a terrible accident, saying it was a defective shotgun but the defense didn’t stand up because of expert testimony.
It was finally time for the judge to hand down the sentence, and he gave him 25 years to life. It is a reminder, not only of the seriousness of living up to any consequences but just how precious life is.
