All parents have the same concern about their children. They want to make sure they are healthy and safe at all times.
The Robinson family felt similar and they wanted to make the room their baby would be staying in as safe as possible. They prepared everything in advance while Mrs. Robinson was pregnant and ready to have a second child.
When their son was born, they were happy to bring him home. They also, however, loved animals and they wanted to have a new dog in the family as well.
The problem was, that they wanted to bring the puppy in just before the new baby arrived at home. They took their 6-year-old son along with them to visit an animal shelter. They were looking for a puppy that would grow with the children and be their friend.
When they went to the shelter, they heard a lot of stories about the difficulties the animals had before they arrived. It was while they were leaving, however, that they noticed Benson, a 4-year-old pitbull.
Benson was shy and standing with his tail tucked between his legs. It seemed as if he had given up on humanity altogether.
The shelter told them that Benson had been abandoned on the streets after being used as a fighting dog. When volunteers found him and brought him to the shelter, he was adopted by another couple but they returned him because he was aggressive.
The shelter did not recommend that Benson should go home with the Robinsons but they insisted. They took the time to work with Benson, teaching him how to walk on a leash and forming a bond with him.
After the new child arrived, they brought him home and introduced Benson to the baby. The pit bull sniffed and licked the face of the infant so they knew they had a bond forming there as well.
At one point, however, Benson began barking and was trying to bite the bars of the crib to gain access. The family was frightened, thinking that Benson was going to injure the child but when they picked the baby up, they realized he wasn’t breathing.
Fortunately, the medical professionals at the hospital were able to revive the baby. They told the Robinsons that if the baby had not been taken to the hospital, the outcome would have been tragic.
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes but this particular hero has four legs, a tail, and is a loved part of the family.
