Susan Lucci, 75, Opens Up About Her Heart Procedure

Susan Lucci, the talented 75-year-old actress, recently shared her experience with heart disease. In a recent interview with Good Morning America, she revealed that she had to undergo a second emergency surgery due to her condition. This news comes three years after her initial heart problems.

Lucci explained that she started experiencing shortness of breath and a sharp pain in her jaw, which reminded her of the symptoms she had experienced previously. Worried about her health, she followed her doctor’s recommendation and sought medical attention immediately.

Upon examination, it was discovered that one of her arteries was blocked by 80%. To clear the obstruction, Lucci needed to have another stent implanted. Her doctor, Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, chairman of cardiology at St. Francis Hospital, emphasized that she wasn’t having a heart attack at the time but her symptoms were concerning enough to warrant the procedure.

It is commendable that Lucci recognized her symptoms and took swift action. Heart disease can often be harder to detect in women, and symptoms may be milder or less obvious compared to men. If Susan had delayed seeking medical help, it could have resulted in a major heart emergency.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in the US, highlighting the importance of understanding the signs and symptoms. Sometimes, heart problems do not present with the classic symptoms of chest pain and can be challenging to diagnose.

Dr. Charles Chambers, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute, advises everyone to be cautious and seek medical attention if unsure. This is especially true for individuals aged 60 and above, those who are overweight, have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure.

Here are a few key symptoms to watch out for:

Chest Discomfort

Chest discomfort is the most common sign of heart danger. If you experience pain, tightness, or pressure in your chest, it could indicate a blocked artery or a heart attack. These sensations typically last for more than a few minutes and can occur at rest or during physical activity.

Nausea, Indigestion, Heartburn, or Stomach Pain

Some individuals may experience these symptoms during a heart attack. Women are more likely than men to report this type of symptom. If you are at risk for heart problems and experience these symptoms along with others on this list, it is crucial to consult a doctor.

Throat or Jaw Pain

While throat or jaw pain is unlikely to be caused by a heart problem, it is worth noting. Muscular issues, a cold, or sinus problems are more common culprits. However, if you experience pain or pressure in the center of your chest that spreads to your throat or jaw, it could be a sign of a heart attack.

Remember, there are other symptoms to be aware of, such as pain that spreads to the arm, dizziness, excessive snoring, sweating, swelling in the legs, feet, and ankles, and irregular heartbeats. It is essential to be vigilant and seek appropriate medical care if you notice any of these signs.

By being aware of the symptoms and taking prompt action, we can better protect ourselves and our loved ones from the dangers of heart disease. Let Susan Lucci’s story serve as a reminder to prioritize our heart health and seek help when needed.
