In a touching display of compassion, Esther McCool, a custodian at Melba Passmore Elementary in Alvin, Texas, is being hailed as an “angel” for her extraordinary kindness towards an upset 4th-grade student with autism. Last week, on September 10, McCool went the extra mile when she noticed Kenlee having an exceptionally tough morning, struggling with the noise and commotion in the cafeteria.
According to Rachel Moore, spokesperson for the Alvin Independent School District, Kenlee, who finds the cafeteria environment challenging, laid down on the stage that morning, covering her head with a blanket. When Mrs. Esther passed through the cafeteria, witnessing Kenlee’s distress, she promptly laid down beside her to offer comfort.
A poignant photo captured the moment, depicting Kenlee wrapped in a blanket, curled up on the wood floor. Beside her, McCool is shown in a similar position, with a comforting arm around the student. Kenlee’s mother, Hollie Bellew-Shaw, shared the heartwarming photo on Facebook, expressing gratitude for McCool’s empathetic gesture.
In her Facebook post, Bellew-Shaw praised McCool as “literally the best, sweetest individual in the world.” She recounted how Kenlee, seeking solace from the cafeteria noise, chose to lie down on the stage with her blanket. When McCool noticed her distress, she joined Kenlee, laying down beside her and gently patting her back.
The photo, a testament to McCool’s kindness, has resonated widely, receiving hundreds of shares online. Moore mentioned that McCool and Kenlee gained significant attention as the image circulated on the internet. The school officials expressed their excitement, highlighting McCool’s well-deserved recognition and commending her for embodying the values the district strives to uphold.
Bellew-Shaw shared with KTRK that Kenlee and McCool have shared a special bond for about three years, with the student often running up to the custodian for a hug. Moore emphasized that school officials are delighted to spotlight McCool’s positive action, showcasing the impact of a simple act of kindness.
“This underscores the power of a gentle word, a warm hug, and a bit of compassion — all it takes to create a profound impact in a child’s life,” highlighted school officials in a Facebook post.
The heartening story of Esther McCool’s compassionate gesture towards Kenlee serves as a reminder of the positive impact individuals within a school community can have on the lives of students. McCool’s recognition reflects the importance of fostering an environment of empathy and understanding, where small acts of kindness make a significant difference.
