However, how did this seemingly normal child cause such strong feelings?

According to PBS, the man he would grow up to be had roots in his childhood.

He learned early on that there were only two kinds of people in life—winners and losers—from his strict upbringing.

His father, a strict and demanding man who espoused aggression and disregarded vulnerability, was the source of that philosophy.

It was a straightforward but harsh lesson: either dominate or be dominated.

He became unruly at home and was sent to a military academy when he was thirteen. There, physical confrontation was used in addition to rules to enforce discipline.

The boy rapidly adapted to a bullying culture, according to classmates.

One biographer wrote, “He ruled the dorms with an iron fist and yelled at his peers.”

Others recalled his fierce competition, which was frequently resented but never stopped him. For him, the experience was empowering rather than traumatic.
