There are certain moments in our life that are very special and are never to be repeated. These are the moments that often define us in many ways, and we want them to go perfectly.

One special moment in many people’s lives is the day they become a commissioned officer. Perhaps the most important part of the event is receiving a salute for the first time.

The person who gives the salute is an honored individual, but for the young man we have in this story, the person who would salute him would not be able to attend. It was his grandfather, but he lived over five hours away and he couldn’t make it.

When the newly commissioned lieutenant realized that his grandfather couldn’t be there, he was likely downhearted. He knew that he wanted to get the first salute from him, but how could he do so with so much distance between them?

That is when the young man made the decision to get in his car and drive more than five hours to his elderly grandfather’s home. When the grandfather answered the door, he couldn’t have been more excited.

The grandfather said: “May I be the one to be the lucky one to give you the first salute of your career?”
