The FBI Has Questioned Both the Romantic Partner and Roommate of the Suspected Assassin of Conservative Commentator Charlie Kirk, Revealing New Insights Into the Suspect’s Behavior, Potential Motive, and Daily Life Prior to the Alleged Crime—Here’s What We Know So Far From Ongoing Investigations and Witness Testimonies.

Digital communications were central in identifying Tyler Robinson as the suspect in the killing of political activist Charlie Kirk. Investigators say text messages between Robinson and his roommate, Lance Twiggs, provided key leads. Twiggs, 22, who lived with Robinson in St. George, Utah, cooperated with authorities and turned over messages that detailed instructions for accessing a rifle, bullet engravings, and a change of clothes. These exchanges were pivotal in tracking Robinson, who was later arrested and is being held without bail.

FBI officials confirmed that Robinson lived with a transgender partner, who is also cooperating with the investigation but faces no charges. Electronics seized from the shared apartment have been sent to the FBI Laboratory in Quantico for further analysis. Public records and family sources confirmed Twiggs as Robinson’s roommate, though questions remain about the nature of their relationship. Neighbors reported the townhouse appeared vacant shortly after the incident.

Court filings revealed that Robinson had allegedly planned the shooting in advance. Messages sent to Twiggs described retrieving a distinctive rifle, adding a scope, engraving bullets, and preparing disguises to avoid detection. These details suggest a premeditated effort to commit the crime and escape. However, Robinson’s grandmother denied any knowledge of him owning or using firearms, stating he never hunted or expressed interest in guns.

Law enforcement recovered the suspected weapon—a bolt-action rifle—along the route where Robinson fled. Forensic teams collected additional evidence, including a palm print, forearm impressions, and footwear tracks. The rifle and related evidence are undergoing analysis. Though Robinson has no prior criminal record, he now faces charges including aggravated murder and obstruction of justice.

One unusual aspect of the case is the engraved messages found on recovered ammunition. Governor Spencer Cox and digital culture expert Jamie Cohen highlighted that the phrases referenced internet memes, video games like Helldivers 2, and subcultures such as the furry community. While these messages may appear trivial, experts warned they could carry layered or extremist meanings aimed at specific online communities. The FBI has not determined if these messages relate directly to Robinson’s motive.

Robinson’s father played a key role in his surrender. After recognizing him in surveillance footage, he confronted Robinson, who allegedly confessed and expressed suicidal intent. A family-connected youth pastor helped defuse the situation and contacted federal authorities. Robinson was arrested without incident. Prosecutors are still considering whether to pursue the death penalty, with national figures like Governor Cox and former President Trump voicing support for it.
