Emily Carter had always considered herself a light sleeper.
So when she woke up shortly after sunrise one morning, something immediately felt unusual.
Her bedroom was quiet, her windows were closed, and everything appeared normal.
Then she looked at her left arm.
There was a strange red mark near her wrist.
It wasn’t a serious injury, but it looked unusual—almost like a perfectly shaped circle pressed against her skin.
Emily couldn’t remember hurting herself before going to bed.
She checked her sheets and the floor beside the bed, but there was nothing that explained it.
Then she noticed something else.
Her bedroom door was open.
Emily always closed the door before going to sleep.
She initially assumed she had simply forgotten.
But the feeling that something wasn’t right stayed with her throughout the morning.
She Checked the Security Camera
A few months earlier, Emily had installed a small security camera in the hallway outside her bedroom.
She had bought it mainly because she occasionally heard strange noises during the night.
There had never been anything particularly concerning on the recordings.
Until that morning.
Emily opened the footage from the previous night.
For several hours, nothing happened.
She watched herself walk into the bedroom, turn off the light, and go to sleep.
Then the clock on the recording reached 3:17 a.m.
The camera detected movement.
Emily leaned closer to the screen.
Her bedroom door slowly opened.
At first, she thought she was looking at herself.
But then she realized she was still asleep in bed.
A dark figure appeared in the hallway.
It stood outside her bedroom for several seconds.
Emily couldn’t make out a face.
The hallway was too dark, and the camera’s night vision made the figure look almost like a shadow.
Then the figure appeared to move toward the bedroom.
Emily stopped the video.
She replayed it.
Again.
And again.
Every time, she saw the same thing.
Seven Seconds Were Missing
Emily continued watching.
The figure seemed to disappear from the camera’s view.
Then the footage suddenly jumped forward.
Seven seconds were missing.
When the recording started again, the hallway was empty.
The bedroom door was open.
Emily was still asleep.
Nobody else could be seen.
That frightened her more than the figure itself.
She immediately checked the front door and every window in the house.
Everything was locked.
There were no signs of forced entry.
Emily also checked the other security recordings, hoping another camera might explain what happened.
Nothing.
What About the Mark?
The strange mark on Emily’s arm was still visible.
She took several photographs of it and showed them to a doctor.
There was no obvious explanation from the photograph alone, and Emily was advised to keep an eye on it.
Over the next few days, the mark gradually became lighter.
Eventually, it disappeared.
But Emily couldn’t stop thinking about the security footage.
She saved a copy of the recording before replacing the camera.
She also began locking her bedroom door every night.
Then She Noticed One More Detail
Several days later, Emily watched the footage again.
This time, she increased the brightness and slowed the video down.
That’s when she noticed something she hadn’t seen before.
Just before the recording skipped, the dark figure appeared to turn slightly toward the security camera.
For a moment, it almost looked as though the figure was looking directly at the lens.
Emily couldn’t identify the person.
She couldn’t explain how anyone could have entered the house.
And she couldn’t explain the missing seven seconds.
There may be a completely ordinary explanation.
The figure could have been a shadow, an optical illusion, or a strange camera artifact.
The mark could have been caused by something as simple as pressure against her skin while she slept.
But one question continues to bother Emily:
If there was nothing unusual in her house that night, then what exactly did her camera capture at 3:17 a.m.?
To this day, she says she still doesn’t know.
And she has never experienced anything quite like it again.
