Senate Passes Landmark 88-2 Bipartisa

In a rare bipartisan vote, the U.S. Senate passed legislation to modernize the

nuclear energy sector, approving the bill 88–2 and sending it to President Joe Biden.

The measure aims to reform regulations that supporters say have

“slowed U.S. nuclear development for decades” while also renewing funding for firefighter grant programs.

The bill seeks to streamline licensing, reduce costs, and speed up environmental reviews while maintaining safety standards.

Backers note the U.S. operates 93 commercial reactors supplying about 20% of the nation’s electricity, and

argue nuclear power provides “reliable, low-emission energy” as demand rises and climate goals intensify.

Lawmakers hope reforms will encourage investment in advanced technologies like small modular reactors.

Critics warn that “faster approvals could weaken essential safeguards,” raising concerns about environmental reviews, public input, and nuclear waste.

Still, overwhelming support signals nuclear power is increasingly seen as vital to U.S. energy and climate strategy.
