Minnesota GOP Senator Unexpectedly Dies: ‘Saddened to Learn’

Minnesota Republican State Senator Bruce Anderson, a respected lawmaker and U.S. Navy veteran, passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2025, at the age of 75. Known for his decades of dedication to public service, Anderson represented Wright County and parts of Hennepin and Meeker counties in the Minnesota Legislature for over 30 years.

First elected to the state House in 1994, Anderson transitioned to the Senate in 2012, where he continued to advocate for issues close to his heart, including agriculture, veterans’ affairs, broadband access, and public safety. A native of a rural Minnesota dairy farm, Anderson’s upbringing shaped his lifelong commitment to farmers and rural communities. His military service extended beyond the Navy, including time in the Minnesota Air National Guard and U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson (R-East Grand Forks) described Anderson as “a dedicated public servant, loving family man, and dear friend to many.” Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy praised his kindness and bipartisan approach, calling him “a decent, committed colleague who worked tirelessly for Minnesotans.”

Anderson lived in Buffalo with his wife, Ruth. Together they raised eight children and were proud grandparents to 14 grandchildren. Colleagues and community members remember him as a man of integrity, humility, and unwavering work ethic.

Governor Tim Walz is expected to call a special election to fill Anderson’s Senate seat. His passing comes just weeks after the tragic death of former House Speaker Melissa Hortman, who was killed in a politically motivated attack in June, further shaking the Minnesota political community.

Bruce Anderson’s sudden death leaves a significant void in the state’s leadership. His legacy will be remembered not only in legislation but also in the countless lives he touched through service, conversation, and his steadfast dedication to the people of Minnesota.
