House Approves Bill Restricting Gender Transition Procedures for Minors

The House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that would ban gender transition-related medical treatments for minors, including surgeries and the use of hormones. The measure would impose severe criminal penalties on medical providers, with possible sentences of up to ten years in federal prison. The bill passed narrowly by a 216–211 vote, largely along party lines, immediately triggering strong reactions nationwide.

Civil rights advocates criticized the proposal as one of the most far-reaching federal efforts targeting transgender-related healthcare. While the bill faces long odds in the Senate without significant bipartisan backing, supporters celebrated the vote as a major step toward restricting medical transition care for those under 18.

Republican lawmakers argued the legislation is meant to protect children from irreversible decisions and prevent what they described as ideological pressure in healthcare settings. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was reported to be a key figure in pushing House leadership to bring the bill to the floor, framing it as part of a broader political agenda tied to recent executive actions.

Democrats and opponents strongly disagreed, arguing the legislation replaces medical expertise with politics and could criminalize doctors for providing care that families and specialists believe is appropriate. They warned it could interfere with parental decision-making, intensify fear among patients, and expand government oversight into private medical matters. The vote showed how divided Congress remains on this issue, with further related proposals expected to continue driving debate in the weeks ahead.
