Family Pulls Out Camera For Proof Of What McDonald’s Put On All Of Their Sandwiches

Note: we are republishing this story, which originally made the news in August 2017.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has publicly accused a McDonald’s restaurant in Decatur, Alabama, of deliberately placing bacon in a Muslim family’s meal—an act that has sparked outrage and raised concerns over potential religious discrimination. A video related to the incident has circulated online, further fueling the controversy.

The family, who had been visiting from New York, made a routine stop at the McDonald’s during their trip, placing an order for 14 sandwiches. According to AL.com, the family had opted for their usual choice: McChicken sandwiches, a staple they had ordered numerous times without issue. However, this time, something seemed off.

As they began eating, members of the family noticed something unusual in the taste and texture of their food. It didn’t match what they were familiar with. Upon closer inspection, they discovered pieces of bacon inside the sandwiches—an ingredient that is strictly forbidden in Islam. Consuming pork or pork products violates a core tenet of Islamic dietary law (halal), and for devout followers, such a breach is considered deeply offensive and spiritually compromising.

“They started noticing it tasted different to them,” said Khaula Hadeed, executive director of CAIR’s Alabama chapter. “They eat McChicken all the time at McDonald’s. They knew what they ordered—they know what’s in the sandwich.” According to Hadeed, the family had made no special requests or changes to their order that would justify the inclusion of bacon.

Hadeed emphasized that this was not simply a customer service error, but a more serious issue that appeared to target the family’s religious identity. “To us, this looks like a deliberate act—an attack on this family’s faith and dignity,” she said, describing the situation as both hurtful and humiliating. CAIR has called for a full investigation into the incident, including accountability from the restaurant and corporate McDonald’s.

For the Muslim community, this incident hits a nerve beyond the food itself. It raises broader questions about religious tolerance, respect for dietary restrictions, and the treatment of minorities in public establishments. CAIR argues that if the act was intentional, it constitutes a clear violation of the family’s civil rights and is emblematic of a deeper issue of Islamophobia that remains prevalent in some parts of the country.

The family, shaken by the experience, is reportedly considering legal options, and CAIR is supporting them in their pursuit of justice. The organization is urging McDonald’s to issue a formal apology, implement sensitivity training for employees, and take concrete steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

As the story continues to gain attention online and within national media, it serves as a potent reminder of how small acts—intentional or otherwise—can have profound emotional and spiritual consequences for those affected. In a society that prides itself on diversity and inclusion, respecting religious boundaries isn’t just a matter of customer service—it’s a matter of fundamental human dignity.

“It doesn’t sound like a mistake, especially on 14 sandwiches,” Hadeed declared, calling the incident “an intentional act of religious and ethnic bigotry.”

Now Hadeed is demanding an investigation, reporting that one of the adults vomited twice afterwards.

“They’re essentially disturbed about it,” she said of the family.

“McDonald’s should investigate this incident, identify and terminate the employees responsible, and take proactive steps to satisfy this American family’s concerns, starting with an apology.”

News of the incident provoked fierce debate on social media.

Some empathized with the family and believed the accusations.

“I’ve certainly seen ‘good Christians’ doing some nasty things to those who are different,” said one AL.com reader. “I don’t know what happened here, but I can believe that someone putting together the sandwiches in a way that they knew would be offensive … I tend to believe the Muslim family, and think that some nasty fool stuck bacon into their sandwiches as a way to humiliate and inflict suffering on someone who is ‘other,’ they added. “That’s UnAmerican, in my books.”

“Decatur is a hot bed of alt-right, religious fanatics who aren’t tolerant of anybody who doesn’t look like a Baptist,” chimed in a second.

Others, however, were less than sympathetic, and a few were even skeptical.

“It’s a scam,” wrote one, echoing the sentiments of a few who argued the family intentionally created the controversy for money or attention. “They probably picked an Alabama McDonald’s because they figured it would draw more attention than say a McDonald’s in NYC.”

“Yeah, I don’t believe this was done by any McDonald’s employee,” wrote another. “I’d say 99% of the time, the people working in the back aren’t looking to see who their customers are.”
