Former U.S. President Barack Obama recently offered a candid glimpse into his personal life, speaking openly about the challenges in his marriage with his wife, Michelle Obama. While addressing students during a visit to Hamilton College on Thursday, Obama reflected on how the demands of his presidency affected his relationship at home.

During the discussion, Obama admitted that after spending eight years in the White House, he found himself dealing with “many problems” with his wife. He explained that the pressures and responsibilities that came with leading the country placed a strain on their personal life. Now that he has been out of office for some time, Obama said he has been making an effort to reconnect and enjoy life a bit more, including spending quality time with Michelle.

The conversation came in response to a question from Hamilton College President Steven Tepper, who asked the former president how he has been spending his time lately. Obama said much of his schedule is focused on the work of the Obama Foundation. In addition, he revealed that he is currently writing the second volume of his presidential memoirs, joking that the process feels like completing “50 term papers.”

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have been married since 1992. However, the couple has not appeared together in public as often this year. In March, Barack was seen attending a Los Angeles Clippers basketball game and dining out in Los Angeles without Michelle. She was also absent from events such as the funeral of Jimmy Carter and the 2025 inauguration of Donald Trump.

Despite the speculation that sometimes surrounds their public appearances, Obama’s remarks suggested that he remains focused on balancing his post-presidential work with strengthening his relationship and enjoying more personal time.
