The driver, Ronald B. Harrison, failed to see a semi-truck in time, resulting in a devastating collision. The impact was catastrophic, killing Mansfield, Brody, and Harrison instantly. Miraculously, her children escaped with minor injuries. This tragic accident not only shocked the nation but also led to regulatory changes in vehicle safety, including the introduction of the underride guard on tractor-trailers, which is often referred to as the “Mansfield bar.”
