Judge Frank Caprio, a Rhode Island legend and beloved TV figure known as “America’s nicest judge,” has passed away at the age of 88 after a battle with cancer.
Caprio captured the hearts of millions with his compassionate rulings on the TV show Caught in Providence, where he often gave struggling defendants—especially veterans and families—second chances instead of harsh penalties.
In many cases, he personally paid fines out of his own pocket, showing that justice could be served with both fairness and humanity. His kindness made him a viral sensation online, with countless clips of his heartfelt rulings being shared worldwide.
“My father taught me that everyone has a story,” Caprio once said. “Before you pass judgment, listen.”
Tributes are pouring in from across the country for the man who proved that a judge could wear both the robe of the law and the heart of the people. Rest in peace, Judge Caprio—you will never be forgotten.
