Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Portuguese footballer for Liverpool, tragically lost his life in a car accident. The incident took place in the province of Zamora, Spain, on the A-52 highway, at kilometer 65 near the Sanabria region.

Jota was traveling with his younger brother André, 26, a professional footballer for Penafiel. Their vehicle suddenly veered off the road, leading to a devastating crash and subsequent fire that engulfed the car and spread to the nearby vegetation.

Emergency services were alerted by witnesses who saw the car in flames. Although the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, early reports suggest that a tire may have burst, causing the vehicle to lose control and ignite upon impact.

The fire reportedly made any chance of survival impossible. By the time first responders arrived, the flames had fully consumed the vehicle. Authorities are continuing to gather information to confirm what led to the fatal accident.

This heartbreaking event comes just 10 days after Diogo Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held on June 22. The couple shared three young children: Denis, born in 2021; Duarte, born in 2023; and a daughter born earlier this year, whose name has not yet been made public.

Jota’s sudden death has shocked both fans and the football community worldwide. He had been a key part of Liverpool FC since 2020, when he transferred from Wolverhampton Wanderers for €44.7 million.

In his time at Liverpool, Diogo Jota made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and assisting 26 more. He played a vital role in the club’s recent successes, winning the Premier League in the 2024–25 season, the FA Cup in 2021–22, and the League Cup in the same year.

His legacy on the pitch was matched by his quiet strength off of it—a devoted father, a loving husband, and a passionate athlete. The football world mourns the loss of a player in his prime and a man deeply loved by his family and fans.
