The older woman’s family had come home in tears, and there wasn’t much time left.

At the Life Care Center in Kansas City, a patient and Isabelle Jennings, a young caregiver, grew close through music, particularly hymns. Isabelle helped Mary Helen Schmelze regularly and went to her room every Friday to sing a song.

Mary’s health began to deteriorate a few months after they first met. She was close to passing away because of congestive heart failure.
