4-Month-Old Baby Set To Lose Both His Hands, Doctors Baffled Over Diagnosis

Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in December 2019.

In a tragic turn of events, a four-month-old baby boy from New South Wales is battling a puzzling medical crisis that has left doctors perplexed and his parents grappling with heartbreak. Logan’s hands are set to be amputated after a sudden and severe illness unfolded during a weekend retreat with his parents, Matthew Currie and fiancée Shaneace.

The ordeal began when Logan’s vomit turned yellow, prompting concern from his parents, who consulted a general practitioner before their trip to the Gold Coast in early October. Despite the doctor’s reassurance, Logan’s health took a drastic turn during their vacation. He became seriously ill, vomiting, screaming, and developing a red rash, leading his parents to rush him to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, Logan was prescribed antibiotics and sent home. However, the next morning, his rash returned, accompanied by screams and sweating. Alarmed, his parents rushed him back to the hospital, where tests revealed a severe condition. Logan was placed on life support and transferred to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

Doctors identified two types of vasculitis—Kawasaki and polyarteritis nodosa—affecting Logan’s arteries, causing dilation and hindering oxygen transport to organs. The aggressive and mysterious nature of the condition baffles medical professionals.

After a round of cyclophosphamide, a chemotherapy treatment to suppress the immune system, provided temporary relief, Logan was flown to Sydney’s Westmead Hospital for ongoing treatment. Despite continued efforts, blood clots persist in his heart, lungs, stomach, and various arteries, with a long recovery road ahead.

Logan’s parents anxiously await the results of a genetics test to guide further treatment. Doctors are diligently working to salvage as much of the infant’s limbs as possible, although both hands are slated for amputation. The uncertainty surrounding Logan’s pain has taken an emotional toll on his parents, with good and bad days making the situation even more challenging.

“Some days are worse than others,” shared Matthew Currie. “If he has a good day, we relax, and we can have a good day.”

The family, away from home and facing unforeseen medical expenses, is tapping into emergency savings. Additionally, Shaneace’s maternity leave is concluding soon, and Matthew will be forced to return to work while his son continues hospitalization.

To support Logan’s medical costs and the future need for prosthetics, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated, garnering $22,000 in contributions. The family confronts an uncertain and emotionally taxing journey, navigating a health crisis that has altered their lives in ways they never anticipated.
