Never Forgetting Those Who Served

Sadly, many veterans still struggle after their return from service. Some find that the benefits they receive are insufficient to support them, while others feel lost and uncertain about where to turn once they transition to civilian life. Larry Robeson, a Vietnam veteran, knows this struggle all too well.

According to sources, Larry was facing financial hardship and unsure where to seek help to meet his basic needs. However, as fate would have it, Larry crossed paths with the Fox 5 Surprise Squad in a Las Vegas grocery store. He had accompanied his friend and fellow soldier, Stephanie, who had her own challenges to face.

Stephanie shared with a Fox 5 reporter that she was down to her last $50 and didn’t know what to do next. Little did she know that Dave Hall, the reporter from the Surprise Squad, had a heartwarming surprise in store for her. He and his colleagues offered to cover Stephanie’s grocery expenses, which brought tears of joy to her eyes.

While Stephanie was the initial focus, Dave couldn’t ignore Larry standing silently behind her. Digging deeper, Dave discovered that Larry had founded the Bones for Blankets organization years ago. Its mission? To provide blankets to homeless veterans who had been left abandoned on the streets after serving their nation.

Larry’s determination to make a difference stemmed from the tragic loss of three fellow veterans to hypothermia. He was resolute in ensuring that no more veterans would suffer the same fate. Not only did Larry provide comfort through blankets, but he also became a source of companionship and support for Stephanie, as her husband was often away due to work.

Moved by Larry’s dedication to his fellow veterans, Dave knew that Larry deserved recognition and assistance too. He made sure Larry didn’t leave the store without the Surprise Squad covering his groceries as well. Overwhelmed with emotion, Larry roamed the aisles selecting items he needed while wiping tears from his eyes. The Surprise Squad team cleared his tab, amounting to $278, reminding him, “You served us. It is now our job to help you.”

Larry’s humble response spoke volumes: “This is just overwhelming. I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 13.” His selflessness and resilience were truly inspiring.

It’s essential that we never forget the men and women who have served our country. The sacrifices they have made should never go unnoticed or unappreciated. Larry’s story reminds us that by coming together as a community, we can make a significant impact on the lives of those who have selflessly served us.
